This work employs the Silk-Feather Sandalwood Carving technique. The scene depicts a nimble rat and double-eared corn. Each kernel is plump and full, while the scattered kernels are rendered with natural vividness. The rat’s fur is carved strand by strand with fine knives, every hair distinctly visible, and its expression is lively and vivid. The composition is simple and rustic, with movement and stillness complementing each other. The rat is the first sign of the Chinese zodiac, and corn symbolizes an abundance of the five grains, representing a harvest year after year and well-filled granaries. It embodies the fine wishes for a bumper harvest and a prosperous family. The carving is exquisite and meticulous, condensing a small pastoral harvest scene into wood.
