This work draws on the traditional theme of the “Eighteen Scholars” literary gathering and is one of the “Qin, Qi, Shu, Hua” (Zither, Chess, Calligraphy, and Painting) series of wood-carved table screens. The scene depicts an elegant gathering of literati and scholars seated around to view a painting and appreciate a scroll. Pavilions, terraces, corridors, and waterside structures are nestled among the scenery, while rocks, flowers, and trees are arranged with artful balance. The figures appear respectful yet relaxed, and the literati’s interactions—unrolling the scroll, viewing it, and offering comments—are vividly brought to life on the wood. The artist uses layered relief carving to create spatial depth; the folds of the figures’ garments, the buildings and balustrades, and the branches, flowers, and leaves are all finely carved. The composition is intricate yet orderly, deeply capturing the mood of classical painting. “Painting” embodies the refined taste of brush-and-ink art and aesthetic cultivation, symbolizing how literati and refined scholars expressed their sentiments and cultivated their character through painting. The outer frame of the entire piece is warm and antique in style, while the central panel is carved with fine, meticulous workmanship. It condenses the grandeur of a literary gathering and the elegance of the literati into a single table screen. Suitable for display in a study, it invites quiet appreciation of the lingering spirit of brush and ink.
